How to Measure Jars and Lids for the Perfect Match
Updated – February, 2022
We often hear from folks who have some bottles and jars but need some new lids in order to re-use or re-purpose them. This post will provide guidance on how to measure glass jars and lids to determine what size lid the jar needs, or vice versa. This post primarily addresses how to measure a jar in order to determine it’s finish measurements. The specific measurements (all of them!) of the jar finish and of the lid finish matter. Be sure you are choosing a lid compatible with your jar by browsing from the “Accessories” tab of the jar in question. We link them in this way to avoid order errors. Different Jar Finishes
First, it’s important to know that these are the two primary types of containers and closures currently used in food packaging.
Continuous-thread (CT) is the Mason-style closure mechanism where the jar and lid are both threaded in one continuous bead around the entire circumference of the opening; also referred to as “screw-on”. The skirt (the part that comes down around the mouth of the jar) of these CT lids can vary. Generally, typical mason jars have a 70/450 finish and would require that size of lid. However, there is also a “short skirted” CT finish; with a 70/400 finish. We show examples of these later in the post.
Lug is the closure system where the container has multiple threads and the lid has an equal number of lugs or tabs that grip the corresponding threads; also known as “twist-off” closures.

How to Measure Jars and Lids
Measurements for jars and lids are almost always in millimeters (mm). Don’t have a metric ruler? You can use a standard ruler or tape measure and convert it to metrics. Whether your jar has a CT or lug finish, you will measure it in the same manner. The distance (mm) indicated in the image above is what you will measure.
If you don’t have a tool designed for this purpose, you can place some masking tape or some card stock to serve as a straight edge to take out the guesswork.
To measure lids (CT or lug), you’ll measure the diameter across the inside of the lid.
Once you know which size and whether or not it’s a lug or CT, you can move forward and choose the best lid for your process. Browse our selection of lids here.
We offer a variety of lids for many different uses. For example; We carry a CT metal closure that offers a shorter skirt/profile with F217 foam liner. This lid is ideal for candles, or bath & body products. It’s available in both 70/400 mm CT (which is a shorter profile lid) and 70/450 mm CT (a regular mouth style lid).
We do sell lids by the piece, however, our shipping is not subsidized by our product prices, so the cost of shipping of a few lids will seem quite disproportionate. So that we can properly track shipments once they leave our facility, we only ship UPS.
CAUTION…while we like to encourage responsible re-use of jars, we cannot recommend that you use jars of an unknown standard in your canning process. Many jars are not designed to withstand the pressure canner process and you may end up with product loss or suffer personal injury. Some may not even be able to withstand water bath. Please remember to keep the limits of your jars and/or lids in mind as you use them and re-use them.

Thanks for that info. I have glass gallon jugs I use for storage and new lids would be nice since some are showing rust.
My mother has several very large jars similar to the cracker jars…most of those lids have become very rusty or the paper liners have gotten yucky. This would be a great way to replace them with some fresh lids…and would allow her to store some of her dry mixes and keep them fresh!
I Am interested in new lids for Teddy’s Peanut Butter Jars, as they make very nice jars for honey. The measurement should be straightforward enough, but not sure about the threads. Anyone got any ideas about this?? Thanks in advance!!

Hello Elisabeth, I’m sorry, but the largest lid we currently carry is a 110mm lid. It sounds like you’d have a 120mm lid. Determine whether it’s a lug jar or a CT jar and then try searching for a 120mm lug or 120mm CT lid.
Do you know / have you tried to see if a jar that’s an 89×400 would accept a standard 86mm x 4050 wide plastic mason lid for a non food use – i.e. – only has to go on/stay on/ unthread … no need ofr water tight seal?
Will be useful in the field using plastic 16 oz jar with screened lid to do powdered “sugar roll” of 1 cup live bees — how one tests for how high the mite count is in any given bee hive.

I have several 34 ounce Fido jars that with metal bales that I want to convert to silver screw tops.
I think they are 3.5 inches at the widest part, but I’m not exactly certain (88.9 mm?). It looks like they would be CT not lug.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe these are made with the conversion in mind. From the image, I can’t see that there is a thread that a CT Lid would be able to screw on to.

Hi Barrie, You could try it…but the cost of sending a single lid may be a little cost prohibitive. I’d test it for you if I had one of those jars in possession, but unfortunately, I don’t. If you’re within driving distance of our facility, you’d be welcome to bring the jar and test the lids here in our show room.

I am using Bormioli gallon glass jars with hermetically sealed tops for storing water. I would like to replace the tops with screw tops. The jar mouth is ~3 3/4″-wide.
Hi Sandy, I haven’t seen those particular jars with threads on them to support a screw top. Does the finish of your jar have a thread (CT) or several threads (lugs) that would support either of those styles? The images of the jar finishes in above post should give you an idea of what to look for.

We carry the 38mm lug in gold, black, white. Since Snapple’s packaging is so customized, I’d recommend testing them first to ensure that it’s the lid that you need. If you’re local, you’re welcome to swing by with a bottle and try a sample lid on.
Which lid size will I need if I purchase 4oz jars and 8oz jars
Hello Desiree, It depends on which 4oz jars and 8oz jars you’re looking at – we have several styles in those sizes. The best way to be sure that you’re getting the proper lid with your jars is to bring up the jar details. When you do that, the lids that are designed to fit that jar will flow along the right side of your screen as accessories for that jar.

We have some cracker jars that may end up being close – with a finish of 123mm.However, I don’t believe that the jar is tall enough to accommodate your lid attachment. If you can our customer service, they could measure the height of then entire jar. If you’re local and can stop by, that would be the easiest. If not, try taking as accurate a measurement as you can, using this post as a guide. These cracker jars take a 123mm CT lid.
I’d like to know that the ??/??? measurement is for canning jars – (ball/kerr/mason) wide mouth mason jars and regular/standard jars.

Ball and Kerr wide mouth jars are an 86-460 size lid. Not all “wide mouth” jars and lids are the same as the Ball jars, so you do want to be careful of the general term wide mouth. If you are looking for one piece lids on our website, you can search for items that being with “RC-086”.

I am trying to find lids and caps for the smaller mouth canning jars. When my mother canned in the 1960’s these were referred to as #63. The measurement is 2.5 inches on the outside of the threads. Could you tell me where to find these “antique” lids.

Unfortunately these antique size 63mm lids are not manufactured anymore. Ball did make a 63mm lid many years ago, but it is deeper than any of the 63 mm lids that are manufactured today. Sadly, we are not sure where you would be able to find the lids to fit.
I would like to find a substitute lid for OUI glass yogurt jars. $10.67 is too much to pay for 2 plastic lids!! Why re-cycle if you make a bad decision like that afterwards. Thanks for any help

We have several old jars that have ATLAS Mason on two sides and measurements in OZ on the other two. They are lug jars and measures 61.68 MM or 2.475 in.

There are standards for lids, the best thing to do is to measure in millimeters. It sounds like these may be 82mm and 89 mm lids. We would also need to know if they were lug or CT lids. Lokking for a 120 mm jar lid with seal

We do not carry any 120 mm lids that have a seal. We do carry a 1 gallon cracker jar that comes with a 120 mm lid. The lids for these jars are not sold separately and they do not have a seal. So, I don’t think it meets your needs. Sorry that we can’t help.
Question about the measuring of jars….would the measurement apply to canning jars also…the sealing lid is what I want to know about…I have a couple box’s of #63 caning lids ( no rings) I cant find jars for the lids…can you help??

However, if you have a two piece canning lid that is 63mm, I believe that is an antique lid, or at least one that is not manufactured any more. The question: I have a friend who owned a restaurant she gave me many gallon pickle jars and I wonder is there a different lid that is a canning lid to buy for them to use for freeze-dried items? Do they even make anything like that?

The decorative lids are only available in the regular mouth (70mm) sizes, and in the CT (continuous thread style) and it sounds like your jar would require a much larger lid. Also, pickle jars are often made with a lug finish.

I have about a dozen old jars with screw on lids which have a 3 1/2 inch diameter opening and measure a tiny bit less than 3 3/4 inches on the OD of the thread. They were used for canning back in the 1940 to 50 era. They were stored in a cellar and the lids rusted, The lids are bigger than the wide mouth mason jar lids. Where can I get some new lids?
Hello Hugh, Based on your provided measurements, it sounds like your lid falls in between our 89mm and 110 mm. Unfortunately, we don’t carry that size. It’s possible that it was a more customized lid that isn’t made.

Hello Gene, The “standard” regular mouth canning lid is a 70/450 CT lid. The 70/400 you mention, has a shorter skirt, so the fit will not be proper.

Hello Brenda, That measurement converts to about 60mm. The lug lids we carry that are closest to that are the RL-58 and the RL-63. I’d encourage you to re-measure using metrics, according to the suggested method in this post. If you still come up with something other than those 2 sizes, it’s possible that you have a jar that takes a custom lid.
I have some Allison plastic jars that I bought to store homemade body butters in. But I got them and no regular or wide mouth lids got them.
So following your formulation, the jars measure 3 inches wide at the mouth. That’s 76.2 mm when converted. Would your 70 lids fit? Do you have any recommendations?

Hi Justin, The glass threads on that jar are designed specifically for a short shirted lid, so the standard skirt (70-450) wouldn’t give you a proper fit. I love the idea of reusing old glass jars. Your site is informative about how to measure for lids. But like it has been mentioned before, “…the cost of sending a single lid may be a little cost prohibitive.”. I agree.
I’d like to be able to order a single lid from every lug type lid you carry. Then I can do self tests at home over many years (as new jar sizes/products become available).

A variety pack containing 1 piece of every lug type lid you carry. (Feel free to make other types too!).
These could be packaged in bulk at your facilities with a standard shipping rate (as the weight shouldn’t change). Then people might feel better about trying to reuse old glass jars/bottles.
While the idea of using old jars is a nice concept, not all jars are created with re-use in mind; especially when it come to those needing to be processed. Our measurement guide is intended more for customers who have large quantities of jars which need lids rather than a spattering of jars with differing finishes. Since we don’t have minimum order limits, or small order fees, shipping on small orders will usually seem disproportionate.

Looking for a lid for Santa Cruz Organics style quart juice jars. Lug lid, 4 lugs, inside of lid measures 46-47mm. Do you have something to match?
Hi Trevor, You may wish to measure thread to thread on the jar to see what lid you need. The closest to the 46-47 mm would be the RL-048. However, it’s also possible that the lids for those jars are proprietary for the brand.
Hi – I’m interested in using 8oz glass jars with a deep lug closure. I found 70mm deep lug lids on your site, but can’t find a good 8oz jar with a deep skirt in stock anywhere (Fillmore seems to only have 9oz and it’s out of stock). Can I use your 70mm deep lug lid on a standard (non-deep) 70mm lug glass jar?
Hi Adrian, The lid and jar finish dimensions are very specific, so the deep lug lid is only compatible with a deep lug jar. We’re expecting to see the 9oz in April. The 8oz would be from a different manufacturer, but they won’t likely be running them any time soon because the demand is so low, and their lines are tied up trying to catch up to standing orders. If the 9oz would work for your product, we’d recommend you sign up for the re-stock notification.
How do you measure the width of the thread on a jar? I have some jars that are CT, and they look to be 68mm long, which I assume would be considered a 70. But the threads are much narrower than a mason jar. A mason jar ring or lid will not tighten down on it. From the top of one thread to the top of another thread is about 4mm.
We only carry CT and lugs that are current standards in the industry. We don’t usually measure the length of threads, but the diameter of the finish. It’s possible that you’re looking at a shirt skirt finish (70/400) or it may be something custom for a specific brand.
Everyone’s talking about getting lids. I need a jar that fits 120mm or 12cm. Please shoot me over any suggestions you have. I want to do something fun.

Hello James, That measurement is a little odd. Perhaps try measuring as described in the post to get a more accurate measurement in mm. It might be an 89mm or a 100mm lug lid. Our lug lids are identified by the diameter…so if you need an 89mm lug lid, you would look at the RL-089 items to see which colors are available. It appears that their lids and jars are a signature design. We’ve seen some on etsy – for crafting, but if you’re hoping to do preserves, re-use isn’t recommended.
I’m looking for lid options for my glass container that does not have thread and is smooth. Would any other type of lid work for it?

It sounds like you need a 120mm lid – Rc-120; which we do not carry as stock items. Most jars that require those lids (the cracker jars or other storage jars) usually come packaged with the lids already on them. If you’re lucky, you may see one of those at a flea market or goodwill.
Hi, looking through the comments, I couldn’t seem to find whether I’d be able to use a 70-450 regular CT lid on a jar that is listed 70-400. When I search for 70-450 jars to match the desired 70-450 antique gold CT lids, only 70-400 jars are listed.

Jars with the 70-450 finish require a 70-450 lid. Jars with the 70/400 finish require a 70-400 lid. Our site is set to that when you bring up a particular jar, only the lids made to properly fit that jar will show up in the accessories tab. If you want to see what is compatible with our antique lids, bring up the lid (or any of the 70-450 lids), then go to the accessories tab associated with that lid.
My aunt has given me some old jars, the had DelMonte SunFresh lids on them, how can I tell if they can be used for pressure canning or not?
Hi Bob, Retail jars are generally not recommended for pressure canning because the source of the jars and the specs are usually unknown, and it’s very unlikely that they would have been designed or tested for pressure canning. We would not recommend attempting to pressure can in them even if the 2-piece canning lids fit them.

Hi Diana, Industry measurements are in metrics…so it sounds like you’d need a 120mm CT lid, which unfortunately we do not currently carry.

Well, industry standards for fitment sizes/styles don’t really change, so I’m not sure if you’re saying you can’t find the lids, or if you’re trying to match different jar finishes. Did the style of jar you are trying to match change?
Just found your site. I will be using for various purchases. Currently I am trying to find lids to fit Bertolli jars currently in stores for pasta sauces. They are nice looking jars, and I hate waste. I want to put them to use . (Too many glass jars in land fills now, would like not to add too!). Do you have anything to fit them?
If you can identify the specs (industry measurements) of the finishes of the jars, you can see if we have any that would fit. Most commercially produced jars that are available for retail should have those specs available. The specs refer to the diameter and depth of the finish and the lid required – for example, RC 70/450.
Has anyone noticed some of the new rings (that come with a purchase of new canning jars) will not tighten-down. Some of them pop-off right-a-way & others pop-off during the canning process.
Also, my jars from years past also have longer threads as compared to the new ones I bought today of the same brand names.
This is different…the “rings” come off during the process? That should never happen if they’re screwed on enough. Are you sure that the new jars have the same finish? It sounds like you may have purchased lug jars.

Hi Dollie, There are numerous styles of “26oz mason” jars out there, so you’ll want to determine 1)lug or ct and 2) what the measurements of the finish are. This post is designed to do that. 🙂 Unfortunately, there are some brands that designed a very specific jar mold that requires a customized lid which sometimes is a proprietary design and not available to the public. While this can make their packaging stand out from the pack, the huge down-side is that is makes their packaging less re-usable and less sustainable.

Unfortunately, we don’t carry a lid that wide in diameter. It sounds like a fitment for a vintage jar. If it won’t be for food use, you may be able to find something like that on ebay.
I’m looking for plastic or coated lids (for storing fermented products, not canning) that would fit the “Adams Peanut Butter” jar, 1kg size). These are nice wide mouth jars that are easy to clean, and we like to repurpose when we can. The original threaded caps rust if presented to an acidic environment for too long. The inside diameter of the original cap looks to be 100 – 101 mm diameter

We do ship to Canada and our website will do that quote for you if you’re logged in and have provided your address. However…if you’ve measured according to the description in the post, and got the 100 – 101 mm, it doesn’t look like we have the proper lid. You can see the options by going to the website, click the “Lids & Caps” tab at the top, then along the left side you can sort by size. Our sizes jump from 89mm to 110mm for the CT style.
you explain what the 1st number is (70/400) but you dont explain at all what the 400 is a measurement of, what does that number mean?
I have a Yorkshire Mason jar that measures about 3 1/8″ from outside thread to outside thread and by your description a CT regular thread type

Hi Kurk, In the image, it shows that the 70/400 has a shorter profile than the 70/450. That second value refers to the length of the skirt, or profile of the lid. The measurements you provide don’t match any that we carry. Most lid sizes jump from a 70 mm to 83mm. If your Yorkshire is from a recent production, it’s likely that it was either made as a drinking glass, (with no intention it would work with a standard lid) or it was made with a custom lid. We see this quite often with decorative imported glassware.
I am looking for a large lid that measures 120 mm in diameter (CT lid). Do you have one that large?

Good day, I have a mason jar “style” drinking mug with a handle, it holds about a quart. The mason jar lids, regular and wide mouth are too small to fit. I bought them years ago, when they arrived one of the pair was broken. I used the other lid when the original became rusted, and the that metal life rusted as well. The opening is 77.66 to 78.09 mm, as measured with a caliper. For a little over a year I have not been able to find a lid that will fit, it is a CT lid.

Hi, We have 2, 80oz pickle jars. I measured the lid, and the diameter is ~95mm, outside to outside of the lid, lug style. Any chance you have a lug lid that would fit?

Hi Erin, It’s likely that this is a customized jar/lid combo for a specific brand. Our lug lid sizes jump from 89mm to 100mm.
I have a lot of glass jars that the mouth opening is 4″, 4.25″ and 5- 1/2″. I do not know what kind of lids or what the stock number means because when I change the lids size from inches to millimeters there is no lid size that matches for example; 5.625 = 142.875 millimeters. A lid that measure 5-10/16 fits a 5.25″ jar. which is very confusing to me. I measured as you said above. I do not know what to get. These are screw lids (old rusted metal ones) and I don’t know how to replace them. Can you help? I have never felt so stupid when it comes to finding a lid for these cases of different containers.

I have some old honey jars but cant find the correct lids to be able to use them. They are ct thread and seem to measure 61 mm across the mouth including the threads. Any idea what lid may fit so i can reuse these jars?
Hello Jeff, This measurement may be from a jar/lid finish that isn’t in production any more or a proprietary line. You might have luck somewhere like Ebay in finding some used ones.

Hi Connie, There was a smaller mouth canning jar with 2-piece lids, but it’s been out of production for a long time. To my knowledge, I don’t believe there are two-piece options other than the regular mouth and the wide mouth standards.
Someone gave me 6 old Kerr 112 jelly jars. Do you know which lids would fit them. The interior measurement is 3 3/8 and exterior is 3 5/8. Depth of the band is 7/16 to 1/2. I just thought you might have that jar on file and could tell me if you have lids to fit it. Thank you for your time.
Hi Julia, It sounds like it would be close to a widemouth. We’d recommend you try to find a friend/neighbor who would have a standard widemouth jar/lid/ring combo to see if it fits.
