Where to Find Home Canning Lids

*Update 2023: We continue to receive regular shipments of Bulk Canning Lids and Bands and Ball Retail Packs. See which are available here.

The shortage in supply of home canning lids, also known as 2-piece canning lids, flats, or lids & bands or rings that began in 2020 is in much better shape as we head into this year’s canning season.

Unfortunately, this shortage created a vacuum for some fraud in the production and sale of canning lids. Upon seeing fraudulent sites, we quickly posted warnings and tips on what to look for when purchasing home canning lids. Some of the sellers were new online stores that popped up in response to the demand, and some were sellers on Amazon.

Be Careful Where You Shop!

If we aren’t able to fulfill your order, it’s okay. However, please be careful when shopping with unfamiliar companies. There are some sites taking advantage of people in their frantic search for home canning lids & jars. Some of these look legitimate at a glance, but if you look for some key things, you may be prompted to do a little more research.

Warning Signs for Fraudulent Canning Lids

  • Misspelling of basic terms used in canning – like “regular”, or “plastisol”.
  • Run-on product names or descriptions that appear to be phrases copied & pasted from recognizable brands like Ball/Kerr/Newell.
  • Images that are misleading, not accurate, or misrepresent the actual item for sale. Look at all of the images attached to a particular item. The jars options/designs that are compatible with Ball 2-piece canning lids are very recognizable. If you see something that looks more decorative, it’s not likely compatible.
  • The use of important product components like silicone or plastisol is used interchangeably.
  • Look for a contact method – there should be a phone number that you can call. You might even want to call for clarification on the products you’re considering.

Who Makes Canning Lids

The brands/companies manufacturing 2-piece lids in bulk that are FDA Approved and Made in the USA are by Newell/Jarden/Ball and by Tecnocap. Neither of these bulk products are imprinted with a brand name.  Superb Industries also manufacturers the flats (the portion that you need to be replacing). They are also made in the USA.

When or Where can I get Canning Lids?

We receive monthly mixed loads of Newell/Jarden/Ball items, which contain a rather random combination of jars and retail packs of lids. Be sure that you have signed up for the Back In Stock email notifications on all of the items you need so that you don’t miss out. Items are in high demand and do not last long.  Read more on how to sign-up for back in stock notifications below.

We also expect regular shipment of bulk lids from Tecnocap .

In 2022, we added the Superb Canning Lids to our home canning line. They are made in the USA, and we have not had any challenges in getting them.

Thank you for all the information about knock off canning lids.. When I was looking online last summer, I thought most of the two piece lids looked a little irregular so I bought a big box of your 70-450CT lids and they are fantastic. They cost two cents more than I would have paid for two piece lids and I like them better!

I ordered and received my Ball canning lids from your company last year. They came promptly and I used most all of them in my canning last season. They were wonderful and my canning went very well, thank you for a great product. I have tried ordering again this year , even put my request in for notification when available, none yet. But I keep getting these notices that you have canning lids. I buy in bulk because I can hundreds of jars, many in a pressure canner. I’m a bit confused, would like to get them as we have huge gardens, please advise,

    • Fillmore Container Posted February 24, 2021 at 11:25 am | Permalink

Hello Peg, Notification emails only go out if you signed up for that particular item, so you should only be getting notices for those. 🙂 Did you order the bulk sleeves last year or the “Ball” branded ones? We continue to get monthly rations of Ball items, but because it’s always in a lesser quantity, they sell out very quickly. It’s possible that by the time you get to your email and go to place an order they’re gone. Hang in there and keep checking.

Do u have regular canning lids for sale

    • Fillmore Container Posted February 25, 2021 at 11:37 am | Permalink

The situation on lids is still as explained here in this post- If by “regular canning lids” you mean Ball 2-piece lids. We expect to get regular loads of Ball items, but the best way to know when they come in is to sign up for the notification email.

    Hi there,
When I refer to lids in canning, I mean “just the flat lid” NOT including the ring.
So, if I want to order just the lids what term do I use?

    • Fillmore Container Posted February 26, 2021 at 9:17 am | Permalink

Hi Suzanne, On our Lids & Caps page, you would click on the “2-piece lid” icon/box. The resulting products will include the bulk lids and bands separately, in addition to the Ball packaged items. The bulk lids are not sold by the piece, but by the sleeve.

  9. SUZANNE P QUALLS Posted February 25, 2021 at 6:22 pm | Permalink

    Hi,
You offer the flat lids in a range of prices. Can you tell me please is there a difference in the sealability (is that a word) in the lids? Or if using the cheaper ones do I run the risk of loosing product due to a poor seal? That is caused by the lid, not by me:) Or are they all pretty much the same quality?

    • Fillmore Container Posted February 26, 2021 at 9:19 am | Permalink

They are of comparable quality. However, because they are different, we always recommend testing before doing large batches. The Jarden lids (the lids with the SKU beginning with a J” are actually Ball’s unbranded bulk line of lids.

Why is there a problem finding canning lids in 2021???????

    • Fillmore Container Posted April 6, 2021 at 8:50 am | Permalink

Hi Linda, The impact that 2020 has had on the industry (not just in the states, but around the world) is more complicated than it may initially appear. Every component of manufacturing and logistics – from sourcing & transporting of raw materials to the actual manufacturing and distribution, resources have been stretched.

Unfortunately, I bought some of the knock off brands of lids last year. They did not fit the bands. Yes, they were purchased off Amazon. I got my money back, but had to discard all of the lids. Buy American.

Cannot find regular or wide mouth lids anywhere.

    • Fillmore Container Posted May 15, 2021 at 9:02 am | Permalink

Hi Pamela, We continue to get a monthly delivery of Ball goods, buy they all go very quickly, so it helps to have signed up for the notification of restock. We also have the bulk flats in regular and wide mouth. Ball items are also trickling into many of the large retail stores, so you happen upon them there.

I see no excuse for jar lid shortage second year.

    • Fillmore Container Posted June 15, 2021 at 7:40 am | Permalink

We hope so, too! But since lids aren’t the only products which require tin-plate raw materials, and businesses (including everything from manufacturing to transportation) are struggling to hire enough staffing, there will likely continue to be more frequent outages and longer lead-times.

Last year I bought from a fake website I spent about $130 with shipping. I believed I was getting 4 cases of 1 qt. jars and like 60 seals n rings.
I had one communication before I received the order to try to stop shipment as I found bait n switch buttons.
Basically I was told so sorry I made the mistake blah blah blah. I didn’t get speedy shipment I paid for.
The rings were off round the lids were a micro dot too large and the buy one get one was a joke. Instead of a minimum of 4 cases of jars I recieved FOUR 1 quart jars and the rings. The website was gone by the time I received my shipment. They used colors and mock ups to look similar to Ball. It was a 100% SCAM. Start with American manufacturing if you can! Don’t overpay on Amazon…you can get ripped off there as well.

    PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

Hi Leslie, Unfortunately, your story is a familiar one, which is why we felt it was worth posting about the issue and providing guidance on how to spot a fraudulent site. We hope you were about to get what you needed.
