Recipes for Spice Mixes in a Jar

Today we are hosting Cristina from An Organic Wife. She is sharing her favorite ‘make it yourself ‘spice mixes. These are so easy to make and store in jars that I bet you’ll nix the store-bought stuff from now on.  We are also hosting a giveaway over on her blog. Spice Mixes in Jars

I’m so pleased to be a guest blogger for Fillmore Container. I make no secret that I love glass jars in all shapes and sizes – anything I can put in a jar, I do.

I keep all my spices and dried herbs in 4 oz. mason jars. They’re the perfect size and look classy. These recipes are a few of my favorite homemade blends. All fit into the 4 oz. mason jars, except the Vanilla Cinnamon Sugar, which fits in a half-pint jar (I love the wide-mouth ones!).

Vanilla Cinnamon SugarVanilla Cinamon Sugar Collage

½ c. coconut sugar or sucanat
2 TBS. cinnamon
1 vanilla bean

Place your sugar of choice and cinnamon in a half-pint jar. Split open a vanilla bean and bury it in the sugar mixture. Screw the lid on and give it a good shake. Wait at least two weeks before using, so the vanilla has time to work its magic. After two weeks, you can discard the vanilla bean or leave it in for continued flavor.

Chili Powder
Chili Spice Mix

2 TBS. ground ancho chilies
2 tsps. chipotle chili powder
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. dried Mexican oregano
½ tsp. cayenne

Grind dried ancho chilies in a blender or food processor to make a powder. You may sift the powder over a fine mesh sieve to get out the seeds and large bits, but that is for appearance more than anything else. Grind the chipotle chilies in the same way. Pour the two powders in a 4 oz. mason jar with the cumin, Mexican oregano, and cayenne. Close the lid and shake it up!

Ranch MixRanch mix collage

4 TBS. dried parsley
1 tsp. dried dill
½ tsp. dried basil
1 tsp. garlic
1 tsp. onion
½ tsp. black pepper

Mix all the ingredients in a 4 oz. jar. To serve, mix 1 rounded tablespoon with ½ cup of plain Green yogurt and ¼ cup of buttermilk.

Pumpkin Pie SpicePumpkin Spice Mix

8 teaspoons cinnamon
4 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg

Place all the spices in a jar and shake to combine. Use according to recipe’s directions.
